I just finished reading an article in Family Circle (May 2009) called Lives on the Edge. The article was about 3 middle class families that now are relying on food stamps and food pantries to feed their families. It doesn't seem to take long to go from a secure middle class income to having to rely on other to feed your family. The stories are sad. And personally a little frightening knowing that no one is immune.
A father down the street lost his job as an engineer in September. His wife is afraid of the cutbacks at her work. They have two children about the same age as Evan and Isaac. He is staying at home with the baby until something opens up.
There are several ways that you can help...
For family or friends that are going through similar situations, pray for them and write a letter telling of what you can do to help them through this time. Keep what they tell you confidential. Show active compassion to them.
Participate in "Stamp Out Hunger!" May 9 by leaving non-perishable food items for the postal carrier to take and distribute to a local food bank. Check out www.helpstampouthunger.com.
Get the children in VBS involved in saving money to eradicate hunger, by having children collect money in a little bread bank. As a young person, I remembered our church gave us rice bowls banks to collect money in at home. During worship we would bring our offering to the alter. This was a very special experience. I still have 2 rice bowls. Evan knows what they are for. They are great learning tools to use with children. WMU will began selling bread banks this summer. I'll let you know when the arrive.
